Do I really need to use protein supplements

I read so much blurb about the endless types of protein supplements, mostly about whey concentrate, isolate and its  many impressive sounding variations. But is protein powder better than food or is it simply a more convenient source of protein? Wouldn’t I be able to get all the protein I need from foods like chicken, milk, eggs etc.

Protein supplements are just as the name says "supplement".

No, you do not NEED protein powder to reach your daily quota, but the powder provides a convenient source of protein.

Ideally, your diet should have a source of lean protein like the ones you named in every meal. If you're eating enough, it is very easy to reach your daily requirements without the use of any whey protein powder.

Not saying that using the whey is bad or isn't beneficial, it simply is a tool for people who have no time cooking/preparing/buying or simply can't eat enough proteins from their diet to reach their target.

My advice would be to save the money from the protein powder and go buy yourself a carton of eggs and some milk.

I think that you didn’t need of any protein supplements. But there is no problem by using high protein supplements. Because, the biggest advantage of protein supplements is not that they can build more muscle than chicken or egg whites or any other whole food protein, the biggest advantage is convenience. It is easier to drink a protein shake than it is to buy, prepare, and cook whole foods. To keep your body constantly in positive nitrogen balance, you should consume a complete protein every three hours. For many people, eating this often is nearly impossible. That is when a high quality protein supplement is most helpful .Aside from the convenience, the truth about protein supplements is they offer a few advantages over protein foods. You want to focus on real food and do not believe all the blurb you read.
